Lakota language teacher Kimimila Locke who teaches the Lakota language at Denver Center for International Studies was featured in a spotlight video by the school earlier this week.
So many Native languages are endangered, which is what motivated Locke, who also works in Native Student Support at Denver Public Schools to teach Lakota.
In the video, Locke admits she’s a second language Lakota learner, meaning she’s not a fluent speaker and has to learn her language alongside teaching it to students.
DCIS requires students to learn a world language in order to receive their high school diploma.
