Ashley Callingbull-Rabbit is one of the most influential Indigenous models of our generation. To name just a few highlights from her portfolio, Ashley was crowned Mrs. Universe in 2015, was the first Indigenous model to be featured in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, and landed the September cover of Fashion Canada in 2021.

Now, she is competing in 2024’s Miss Universe Canada pageant for the very first time. Ashley took to her Instagram to share some gorgeous photos and let her fans know how important this moment is.

“I am excited and incredibly grateful to announce that I am competing for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2024! With this opportunity, I want to make history as the first Indigenous woman to earn the title of Miss Universe Canada and to prove that every individual has a place in this world, no matter where they come from or what their background is. My goal is to spread hope, empower others to love and appreciate themselves for who they are, while living fearlessly by chasing their dreams.” -Ashley Callingbull Instagram

Since Miss Universe Canada’s inception, there has yet to be an Indigenous winner despite Canada’s large Indigenous population and history.

“As an Indigenous woman, I’ve had to overcome many obstacles to be present in the opportunities that have brought me here today. When I break these glass ceilings, I make it my mission to push the shattered glass aside, so that other women can confidently shine in these spaces after me. As a visionary and advocate, I hope to inspire everyone who has ever felt less than worthy to FINALLY become who they were meant to be.” -Ashley Callingbull Instagram

In Ashley’s career, each time she occupies a space as an Indigenous woman for the first time, she opens the door for other Indigenous women to do the same. When she was selected for Sports Illustrated as the first Indigenous woman to be featured in the magazine, she captioned her Instagram post with how excited she was that the door is now open to other Indigenous women who have always wanted to accomplish the same.

“With time, comes evolution & positive change. I whole heartedly agree with the Miss Universe organization that age does not define us. Every one should feel limitless when chasing their dreams and take life at their own pace. It’s never too late to make your dreams come true and I’m READY to become the brightest star in the Universe. Now is the time to make my dream, a REALITY!” -Ashley Callingbull Instagram

The Miss Universe organization announced in the fall of 2023 that it would eliminate all age limits for all Miss Universe and associated pageants. This is monumental for all women who have ever wanted to compete, and is a big defining moment in our society to let women know that, like Ashley said, age does not define us.

We are so excited to see Ashley compete, and we will be rooting for her all the way to the top!
