A new collaboration between Urban Native Era and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy honors one of the most pivotal moments in modern Indigenous civil rights history. The Welcome to Indian Land, Alcatraz Exhibit Collection commemorates the Indians of All Tribes Occupation (1969–1971) and the powerful political statements etched into Alcatraz Island.
Alcatraz Island holds deep significance in the modern Native American civil rights movement. When Indigenous activists occupied the island from 1969 to 1971, they transformed its walls into declarations of sovereignty, self-determination, and resistance. Messages such as “Welcome to Indian Land” became enduring symbols of Native power and pride. Many of those original statements are still visible to visitors today.
The new collection draws directly from that historic artwork. Each piece reflects the bold typography and political language painted by activists during the occupation, translating protest into wearable history. The collection is part of the official National Park Service exhibit, offering supporters an opportunity to engage with this history beyond the island itself.
Produced in collaboration with Indigenous-owned brand Urban Native Era and UrbanRezLife—an artist, activist, and original Alcatraz occupier—the partnership centers Indigenous leadership and storytelling. By supporting the collection, buyers are not only honoring a landmark movement but also investing in Native-owned businesses and cultural preservation.
The Welcome to Indian Land collection stands as both a remembrance and a continuation: a reminder that the fight for sovereignty did not begin in 1969 and did not end there either.
