The Crazy8s Film Society is pleased to announce that this year’s host for their annual filmmaking challenge is award-winning Indigenous actress and director Grace Dove. The highly anticipated Crazy8s Gala event will take place at The Centre in Vancouver on March 29, 2025, with a star-studded afterparty at Science World. Crazy8s is an 8-day short filmmaking challenge and program that provides support and funding to six emerging filmmakers to produce a short film and then showcase it at the Gala.
Vancouver-based Dove who is Secwépemc, is one of the country’s most recognizable actors, is known for roles in Alaska Daily alongside Hilary Swank, as the lead in the film and mini-series Bones of Crows, and roles in Syfy series Resident Alien and Netflix’s The Order. She is also known for her work alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in the Oscar-winning film The Revenant. Not only will Dove host the gala event, but she stars in one of the films, Amanda Wandler’s W7éyle (Moon’s Wife), alongside William Belleau (Killers of the Flower Moon). In 2020, Dove made her directorial debut with the poignantly beautiful and visually stunning short film Kiri and The Girl, which is currently streaming on Apple TV.
“Grace has embraced a responsibility to lift up her audience and her community, which is reflected in her work on screen, behind the camera and in our shared community,” says Grace Chin, Executive Director of Crazy8s Film Society. “We are so honoured to have her host and join us to celebrate the amazing filmmaking talent in British Columbia.”
This year’s talented top 6 finalists were announced in January and have been busy creating their films which will screen for the first time at the gala and be celebrated with Vancouver’s film community and the public-alike, at an exciting and glamorous event on Saturday, March 29th, often dubbed the “best film party of the year.” Tickets are now on sale for the 26th annual celebration of film talent in BC.
Running since 1999, Crazy8s was created to help emerging filmmakers who have little or no access to funding for short films and to train crew and cast. Crazy8s has become a place to discover new talent, provide valuable on set training, and give opportunities for filmmakers to create work that can be used to launch their careers in the film industry. Crazy8s has provided working opportunities for thousands of people, in addition to supporting directors, there are opportunities for producers, writers, performers, cinematographers, editors, and a host of other crew members who gain valuable experience and build working relationships that often continue for many years to come. Many Crazy8s alumni over the past 26 years have gone on to have vibrant careers in the film industry.
