Sacred Cedar Co.: A Sanctuary of Light and Connection

Small Indigenous woman-owned shop Sacred Cedar Co. was inspired by the profound wonder of the natural world and the collective spirit that binds all of us and is on a quest to showcase Indigenous artists year-round in a tribute to the Earth’s beauty and humanity.

Seated on the Swinomish Channel in La Conner, Washington, across from the Swinomish Reservation, Sacred Cedar Co. emerged as a radiant testament to resilience, artistry, and spiritual connection. Amid the challenging Summer of 2021, founder Chenoa Urness (Tlingit/Cherokee) brought forth a place of light amid the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a sanctuary that celebrates the profound beauty of the Earth and the talents of its artisans. Sacred Cedar Co. is more than a store; it connects individuals to the essence of Indigenous representation through the arts.

Urness, a mother of three and a multidisciplinary artist, breathes life into Sacred Cedar. Her deep connection to Mother Earth and her ancestral heritage inspire unique visions, with the store embodying her artistic and spiritual journey. “At the heart of Sacred Cedar lay our dreams, waiting to be discovered and nurtured,” reflects Urness. “As our lives ebb and flow, our journey of self-discovery and self-realization uncovers these dreams, only in need of watering the seeds planted there all along.” Urness’ healing odyssey and academic background in human development, psychology, and social work shape the store’s holistic approach to well-being.

Sacred Cedar Co. is more than a curated collection. Urness strives to create a sanctuary extending beyond the tangible, offering insights into resilience and the transformative power of nurturing emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. The store, envisioned as a beacon of light, invites visitors to celebrate Earth’s beauty and the incredible talents of Indigenous artisans.
