Fresh off the excitement from winning The Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture, Lily Gladstone is up for yet another monumental award. Gladstone continues to make history and headlines as she paves the way for Native American women in the film industry.

Lily told ABC News the morning of the nomination,

“It’s overdue, and it’s not the first. I remember how I felt when Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated as the first Indigenous best actress in ‘Whale Rider’ and seeing that film, seeing a young woman lead that kind of immense work and that kind of groundbreaking shift in the world, that was such an inspiration to me.”

Including Lily Gladstone, here is the list of all Native and Indigenous Academy Award nominees and winners.

  • Keisha Castle-Hughes (Māori) of “Whale Rider” (2003), first Indigenous woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (2004)
  • Yalitza Aparicio (Indigenous Mexican) of “Roma” (2018), first Indigenous Mexican woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (2019)
  • Wes Studi (Cherokee), first Native American to receive an (Honorary) Academy Award, awarded Lifetime Achievement Award (2019)
  • Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet) of “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023), first Native American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (2024)

Lily also went on to speak about how excited she is for others in her community to “feel seen and represented.” We couldn’t agree more, Lily. We love watching you shine. SKODEN!
